Web Pick of the Week
Problems, Puzzlers, and Games from ENC
http://www.enc.org/weblinks/classroom/problems/

The Eisenhower National Clearinghouse (ENC) website hosts a page called Problems, Puzzlers, and Games, where K-12 educators can connect with eighty-four links to a wide variety of educational sites. Some are fun, some are traditional, and some are extremely challenging. Each entry provides the grade levels served, a site synopsis, and a link to the site.

Not only are many of these links great sources for games and challenging activities, many of them are full-service resource sites for educators as well. This multitude of links will have something for everyone. You might want to bookmark this page for future reference.

Teachers Wanted!

TERC (a not-for-profit education research and development organization) is seeking field-test teachers (grades 2-8) for the pre-publication releases of its Leveraging Learning units. For each unit, students conduct hands-on and online investigations; send letters and data to a unit-specific database for comparison and analysis; and engage in embedded assessments that use reading, writing, and communication to demonstrate mastery of standards-based science content.

Units include some of the following topics:

  • (for grades 2-3) What Are Our Favorite Pets?
  • (for grades 3-5) Is Our Rain Acid Rain?; Do We Throw Too Much Away?; and How Much Solar Energy Can We Collect?
  • (for grades 5-8) Are We Getting the Oxygen We Need?; Is the Sound Too Loud?; and The Arctic, the Antarctic, and Us

NSTA is looking for elementary teachers interested in helping with a new NSF grant project in partnership with the National Teachers Enhancement Network. The project will create professional development mini-courses to be delivered online for elementary teachers who use kit-based science curricula such as FOSS, Insights, or STC.

The committee will assist the project by providing feedback during the development process, identifying potential teachers and districts to participate in pilot courses, and making recommendations regarding marketing and dissemination of information about the project.

Committee participants should have web access, familiarity with the web, and experience teaching a minimum of one kit- based unit. Teachers interested in joining the committee should send a brief email message that contains their mailing address and describes their kit experience to NSTA Executive Director Gerry Wheeler (who is also of KSN's National Advisors) at gwheeler@nsta.org.
