Weekly This week's Key Points:
*Web Pick of the Week* and *Awesome Science!* Web Pick of the Week SunWise School Program http://www.epa.gov/sunwise/ Soon, school will be over, and many of your students will be spending lots of time outdoors. Before the school year ends, why not take a little time to discuss sun safety and science at the same time? This site from the EPA provides information about UV rays and the UV index, as well as tips for preventing overexposure to the sun. The website explains: "The SunWise School Program is an environmental and health education program that aims to teach children and their caregivers how to protect themselves from overexposure to the sun. Through the use of classroom-based, school-based, and community-based components, SunWise seeks to develop sustained sun-safe behaviors in schoolchildren." Even though it may be late in the year to get involved with a new project, you can still extract useful information from this site to use now. And if you're interested, you could plan to try to make your school a SunWise Partner School next year.
Awesome Science! Jupiter's New Satellites http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/~sheppard/satellites/jup.html Last week, on May 16, 2002, the International Astronomical Union announced the discovery of eleven new satellites of Jupiter. These new satellites, discovered by University of Hawaii astronomers, when added to the eleven discovered the previous year by the Hawaii team, bring the total of known Jupiter satellites to 39. Jupiter now has more known satellites than any other planet. Check out the amazing new movie and still images of the satellites on the site as well.
This is the final Keystone Weekly of this 2001-2002 school year. We hope that you've enjoyed them! The Weekly will return at the start of the next school year. The next Curricular Companion, Models and Design, will be ready over the summer, so check back at the site once in a while if you're interested in exploring these resources prior to the start of the school year. Also, if you find great new sites on your own this summer, be sure to pass them onwe'd love to hear about them and any other ideas and thoughts you might have. Have a delightful summer!
