Web Pick of the Week
How Do Animals Spend the Winter?
http://www.sciencemadesimple.com/animals.html#ANIMALS

A very nice resource for teachers of younger grades, this section of the Science Made Simple site provides great information on hibernation, migration, and adaptation during winter months, and it's all written at a level that makes it easy to share this site with students.

After the informative reading sections, there are some wonderful exploratory activities at the bottom of the page that encourage students to go outdoors and make thoughtful observations about animals' behaviors to ensure survival in difficult weather. With your students, you might want to consider the suggested methods for observing and feeding winter birds; discovering how insects and spiders survive the winter; and studying animal tracks in the mud and snow.

NASA Picks Teacher for Shuttle Mission
http://www.nytimes.com/2002/12/13/science/13AST.html

Science teacher Barbara Morgan will get to see her dream come true when she becomes a member of the astronaut crew bound for to the International Space Station next year. Morgan lobbied for years to reinstate the Teacher in Space program, and four years ago, NASA announced that she would be trained as an astronaut. This year, she was promised a mission. Morgan was the back-up for Christa McAuliffe, who died in the Challenger explosion in 1986.

Morgan is slated to aboard the space shuttle Columbia when it departs for the International Space Station on Nov. 13, 2003.
