Winter Colloquium: "Inside the Classroom: Effective Inquiry Practice"
Monday, February 28, 2000
9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (Continental breakfast at 9:00 a.m.)
The Franklin Institute, 5th Floor Conference Center
222 North 20th Street
Philadelphia, PA

The Winter Colloquium will encourage professional interaction and reflection around the question: Do you know it when you see it: What constitutes effective classroom inquiry practice?

Working in mixed-site small groups, in site teams and as a whole group we will utilize video clips from the just- released "Investigating Classrooms" series produced by WGBH and select resources found on the web. Groups will identify key points and questions, analyze and discuss what facilitates science learning by inquiry, and consider implications for their own teaching. We will sample Horizon Research's Classroom Observation Protocol as a tool for capturing and reflecting on classroom practice.

Time will be allotted in The Franklin Institute's computer lab and for cross- site sharing, project updates, participant questions, and feedback.

Spring Colloquium: "Implementing Alternative/Performance Assessment" and "The Science Museum as a Learning Resource"
Friday, April 7, 2000
9:30AM to 3PM (Continental breakfast at 9AM)
The Franklin Institute
222 North 20th Street, Philadelphia, PA

Much of the morning session will feature Francis Alder, an Assessment Consultant with the ASSET science and technology reform project in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Francis has worked extensively with performance assessment and systematic change efforts. He will engage participants in an exploration of the process of identifying enduring learnings as a focus for kit-related performance assessment, determining what student products provide evidence of learning, and formulating rubrics for identifying proficiency.

Time will be allotted for exploring resources in our Eisenhower Demonstration Center and for further cross-site sharing, project updates, participant questions and feedback.

Special Feature: An opportunity to explore the Museum's exhibits and attend the Omniverse Theater as our guest!

The Franklin Institute gratefully acknowledges the generous support of the National Science Foundation and Unisys Corporation.
