Interdisciplinary Connections for Human Body Science

These sites offer some ideas for connecting science learning with endeavors in other content areas.

Computer Science

Owl Pellets Website
An elementary school teacher created this website to showcase the experiences of his classes as they dissected owl pellets. He includes photographs, original drawings, and explanations in the students' own words. This site may give you some ideas for similar easy sites that you could create with your own class.

Come to Your Senses
This is another nice (and more advanced) example of a type of site that your class might like to create as a way to learn not only about the science but also about web design. This ThinkQuest site, devised by fifth and sixth graders, uses Mr. Potato Head as the tool for providing access to sensory information. They included explanations, imported diagrams, trivia, and links to other strong sites in their well-done presentation. (The site has not been monitored since it was developed, so some links are no longer live.)

Language Arts

Language Arts Thematic Unit: Your Five Senses
Written by a graduate student, this lesson plan puts forth a lot of ideas for tying language arts into a second grade study of the five senses. Many of the activities are similar to those found in the kits, but some of the reading and writing prompts and especially the suggested reading list might help you extend your students' learning.

Literature: Trade Books

Book Recommendations for Kids Studying Food and Nutrition
The Connecticut Association for Human Services recommends these food-related storybooks as a fun way to tie reading to learning about food.

Books for Kids and Teachers on the Senses
If you're looking for additional resources, this is a list of books and resources that a first and second grade teacher found useful when she was exploring the senses with her students. There are no annotations.

Body Books
Peruse the electronic card catalog of teacher resources—mostly books—valued by Emporia State University's Science and Math Education Center. The described books range from stories and content resources to activity books and kits. Each linked title takes you to a more complete bibliography with suggested grade levels and descriptions of the resource. Search for the topic you seek information on by name (try: blood, bone, respiratory system, food, teeth, muscle, protein, heart, etc.) by using the A-Z keyword index, or you could try looking at the title, author, or grade level indexes.

Poetry

Sensory Poems
This teacher offered a great suggestion for helping your students craft sensory poems that consider each of the five senses.

Multidiscipline

Try This: Taste and Smell
These "Try This" extension activities from Newton's Apple use writing exercises, surveying, diagramming, and graphing to engage learners in going deeper with simple tasting and smelling explorations.
